On Sunday 23rd June the 4th Sunderland Karate Championships took place at City Space, Sunderland. Over 160 competitors and 200 spectators supported the event. This year we had various VIPs attending including the Mayor and Mayoress, members of Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue and members of Northumbria Police. All of our VIPs commented on the excellent standard and conduct of all of the competitors.
The day ran smoothly thanks to the excellent help from the referees, timekeepers/recorders and our first aid team, we would like to take this opportunity to thank all of them for their excellent work on the day, which allowed competitors to perform to their best.
During the finals there were some excellent perfomances and some very exciting moments, in particular during the Senior Male Kumite after a very close fight with Solomon Egwu and Martin Fraser during the closing stages of the fight Solomon was winning by wazari and with 0.21 of a second left on the clock Martin raced in with quick footwork and landed an excellent mawashi geri jodan, which resulted in ippon and the Gold medal. Martin was also took Bronze in the Senior Kata and another Gold in Mixed Team Kata his achievements resulted in him winning the overall competitor of the day.
